A big part of building Ignia’s community is participating in other communities of different types — to see what works and what doesn’t.
The ones I’m in this year:
-
HackerNews. I switched from Reddit to HN about 3 years ago. Old-school online community — moderated posts and comments. Zero in-person interaction, but very active. This is where I met amazing people like Derek Sivers and it’s my main source of book recommendations. I’ve learned the value of moderating member contributions.
-
My mini running group. We share photos of our weekly training sessions. There are only 14 of us, and that’s what keeps it active. I’m learning about the value of shared goals. 99% virtual + a few shared runs and races.
-
Miguel Vanegas Torres’s book club. Very active. I also see a lot of shared goals + Migue’s “build in the open” style — testing things openly, live. 95% virtual + some in-person meetups.

The Coworking Thursdays, obviously 🔥 Fully in-person. I’ve learned so much about the value of in-person conversations (obviously), but I think that was something we’d been forgetting since the pandemic. Also learning how to layer tech on top of physical experiences.
I want to get to know more communities — any type, size, or topic — to maybe participate in some, but mostly to learn and see what others are building.
What communities are you part of?
Super helpful if you can share a bit about how it works and what you like about it — even tag whoever leads or coordinates it. I’d love to chat about collaborating or grab a coffee to learn ☕
